Obituary of Eugene C. Hogan

Eugene C. "Gene" Hogan, 87, of Clifton, former resident of Avon, NJ and Palm Beach County, FL, passed away peacefully at his home in Clifton on May 9, 2016. Gene was born December 26, 1928, in Newark, NJ. He was the oldest son of Clarence E. and Evelyn (Galbraith) Hogan. He grew up in Verona, NJ and attended Seton Hall Preparatory School & Seton Hall University. He joined the Navy in 1951, completing his military training at NAVSTA, Great Lakes, IL. He served on The U.S.S. C. K. Bronson, the U.S.S. Hickox & the U.S.S. Fremont. He was honorably discharged from service in 1955. Gene and his wife, Patricia, were married in 1951. After leaving the Navy, Gene began his career with Montgomery Ward and then moved on to General Electric’s Appliance Division. Gene and Patricia ultimately settled in Avon, NJ where they raised their family. Gene was always active in the community. He was a past Grand Knight of the Asbury Council Knights of Columbus, a past Exalted Ruler of the Belmar Elks, and a member of the Belmar Fishing Club. After retiring from General Electric in 1989 Gene & Patricia made their home in Florida where Gene was active in the Elks, Eagles, American Legion, Moose and the VFW. He was also a volunteer at the historic Jupiter Lighthouse. Gene was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. When his wife, Patricia, fell ill he lovingly cared for her until her passing. Gene found love a second time and married Eileen R. Johnson. They resided in both Clifton and Palm Beach County, FL where Gene remained active in the community. He served as Commander of the Clifton VFW, Sr. Vice Commander of the Tequesta, FL American Legion and was a member of the Hobe Sound, FL VFW Honor Guard until illness prevented his participation. In February they returned to Clifton where Eileen affectionately cared for him until his passing. Gene was predeceased by his first wife, Patricia A. (Coyne) Hogan, in 2000; and his youngest brother, Donald W. Hogan, in 2009. He is loved and missed by his wife of fifteen years, Eileen R. (Sutter) Hogan; his brother and sister-in-law, Jack & Joan Hogan of Ledgewood; his sister-in-law, Dorothy Hogan of Verona; his children, Marianne & Robert Wyckoff of Toms River, Kathleen & Brian Fitzpatrick of Avon, Robert & Judith Hogan of Colts Neck, and Richard & Eileen Hogan of Wayside; Nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Gene is also survived by the children of his extended family, Roseann & William Rybicki of Clifton, Douglas & Kerrie Johnson of Bloomfield, Charles Johnson of Clifton, and Carol & Richard Sobel of Haverhill, MA, and five grandchildren. Cremation was private under the direction of Compassionate Cremation Services, Clifton. If desired, donations made in Gene’s memory to a hospice service of your choosing would be greatly appreciated.
