Obituary of Judith L. Mulvey
Judith L. Mulvey, 78, of Somerset, NJ passed away peacefully on January 17, 2021.
Born and raised in Irvington, New Jersey, “Judy” resided in Middlesex, NJ for over 40 years. She relocated to Somerset, NJ where she spent the last seven years of her life with her husband, Raymond L. Mulvey, her high school sweetheart. The two met in senior history class and were together nearly every day for the next 58 years. Their six decades together shone most profoundly during her final months as Ray provided round the clock care at home, never leaving her side.
Judy was a devoted mother to her children (Laurie Mulvey and her husband Sam Richards of State College PA, Richard Mulvey and his wife Jeannette Mulvey of Middlesex NJ, Pamela Heinold and husband Harry Heinold of Millstone, NJ and Raymond J. Mulvey and wife Jill Mulvey of Flemington, NJ). They all knew her love and support was available day or night.
Judy was also a loving grandmother to Hannah, Emma and Anthony Heinold, Luke Bottone-Mulvey, Sam and Suzannah Mulvey. They were her joy and she found special talents to cherish in each. She loved when family and friends would enjoy her stories from “Grandma Judy’s Journal,” a series of handwritten accounts and sketches of “the funny and very wise things my grandchildren have said and done" as they were growing up.
Judy was a devoted sister to her big brother, Joseph ‘Jay’ Stypulkowski, and his partner of 35 years Robert Steele. It was a rare holiday they didn’t spend together.
Judy had a gift for turning strangers into friends. Wherever she went, she left a wake of smiles along with new acquaintances. But her oldest friends were her dearest and those who knew her know that her friendships were one of her proudest accomplishments. Some of those friendships lasted for more than seventy years.
Always an advocate for fair play and self-improvement, Judy was known for pushing beyond her own comfort zone. For this, her children dubbed her ‘Phoenix,’ a name that stuck and a name she enjoyed with equal measures of laughter and grace.
Though a self-proclaimed “terrible cook,” Judy’s love of food was notable. Her family remembers her planning lunch while eating her breakfast or crisscrossing the state of New Jersey for an Italian hotdog (Jimmy Buff’s was her favorite).
Judy’s energy, youthfulness and genuine love of people will be missed terribly.
